The Defiant of 1857

On this day, we remember the bravery of Hoosam Bux and Iradutt Ali from Najafgarh, Meer Khan and Munir Khan from Raisina, and Peer Bux, also from Najafgarh. Each played a pivotal role in the 1857 Uprising and faced execution on February 18, 1858, for their rebellion against British rule.

The Sacrifices for Independence

Mandhata from Barkhedi took up arms during the 1857 Uprising and was executed on this day. Narayan Murmu, a stalwart of the “Quit India” movement, died in jail on February 18, 1944, while Abdul Ali, a supporter of the Royal Indian Navy ratings’ revolt, succumbed to injuries from a protest on February 18, 1946.

The Struggle and Endurance

Nurmugh Singh and Ushruff Ally, both of whom supported the 1857 Uprising, were sentenced to transportation for life on this day. They later died in the penal colony of the Andaman Islands. Mangal Madkami, an active “Quit India” agitator, succumbed to illness due to his imprisonment on this day.

Each year on February 18, we recall the determination and sacrifice of these individuals who played diverse yet crucial roles in India’s quest for freedom.
