The construction of Nedumkotta, also known as the Travancore Lines, was a monumental endeavor initiated in the early 18th century. This defensive barrier was strategically erected by the rulers of Travancore to protect their kingdom from the threats posed by the Mysore Kingdom, which intensified with the rise of Tipu Sultan. Spanning over 48 kilometers, the fortification harnessed the natural topography, integrating deep trenches, high bastions, and a mix of Indian and European architectural techniques. It served not only as a military stronghold but also as a symbol of the region’s resolve to maintain its sovereignty and cultural heritage amidst increasing threats.
